Emi Secrest: A Soulful Journey from the Heart of the South to Grammy Recognition

Emi Secrest, a beacon of talent hailing from the soulful depths of the American South, intertwines the richness of Tennessee whisky and the vibrant energy of the Mississippi River in her music. Her journey in the industry has been marked by performances alongside music legends such as Christina Aguilera, John Legend, and Macy Gray, establishing her as a dynamic and versatile force in the music scene.

For years, Emi toured the world as a featured vocalist with Macy Gray, traveling to 53 countries and honing her craft on global stages. That experience culminated in 2014 when Emi made the pivotal decision to step into her own light and begin her R&B solo career. Around this time, she connected with producer Stanley Rudolph, who was instrumental in helping her craft her signature sound and went on to produce the majority of her early catalog.

Her solo odyssey launched with the release of Fearless in 2014, followed by the single Rollercoaster in 2016 and her album Blue in 2017. In 2019, she scored a significant breakthrough with her hit single Push Ya, which soared into the Top 10 on Stevie Wonder’s KJLH 102.3 in Los Angeles and heralded the arrival of her EP Orange — the first installment of a three-part series showcasing Emi’s prolific creativity.

A standout moment in Emi’s career came when she co-wrote Dreaming Of with Cory Henry for his album Live At The Piano, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Jazz Album at the 66th Grammy Awards. Emi has also performed at the Grammys three times (2020, 2022, 2023), sharing the stage with artists such as Mickey Guyton, John Legend, Jon Batiste, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Ann Nesby.

Beyond her recorded music, Emi’s voice became a household sound as the theme song singer for The Real, which ran for eight seasons across two major networks. She also composed and performed the anthem for J.C. Penney’s So Worth It campaign, syndicated nationally from 2016 to 2018. To date, Emi has secured 27 placements in TV and film, with appearances on shows like Hulu’s The D’AMELIO Show (4 episodes), The Johnsons (Season 1), and Married at First Sight.

Further cementing her presence on screen, Emi served in the house band for the final season of The Steve Harvey Show, where she also had her own segment, and was a featured artist at the NAACP Image Awards.

Between 2020 and 2023, Emi produced and headlined her Live From the Studio concert series, hosting 150–400 guests nightly and spotlighting 10–15 Black and Brown vendors per show. Special guest performers included Cory Henry, Stout, T Nava and the Free Nationals, Charlie Bereal, J Mo, Kenyon Dixon, Cocoa Sarai, B-Slade, and more, with celebrity attendees like Faith Evans, Janelle Monáe, and Tisha Campbell.

Her collaborations continue to showcase her versatility:

At the core of Emi Secrest’s journey is her belief in “making a table for herself in every area of her life.” Her story is one of resilience, reinvention, and undeniable talent — and with her highly anticipated new album Colors of Love set to release by the end of May, and her new visual podcast Uncomfortable Conversations launching this summer, Emi continues to expand her influence and creativity. Her soulful, powerful journey is just getting started.
